Tim Bellingham's policeman friend Harry Trewin describes him as a "leaning man", not yet a crook but not completely honest either, since he uses his fishing launch for a little smuggling on the side. When Tim's new girlfriend Lena asks him to help her brother flee the country in order to get away from the bookmakers who are hounding him, he agrees, but gradually begins to doubt if it is bookmakers who are after him and if the man is really her brother.
